Tones of Brown

Some people say when they think of God they think of an elderly man with white hair and beard, or a sky blue because it's 'heavenly' and 'peaceful', and things of that nature.  For me, whenever I think of Jesus I think of brown and all their variants (just as a friend of mine's favorite color is green, but each year or so it's a different shade that enchants her, such as one time we went on a mission trip and she said she liked 'puke green' at that time).  My Bible that I got from baptism has a brown cover.  Jesus's lineage is from a 'brown' people (please don't take that offensively).  Brown is human, ordinary, what he uses to perform his miracles (like healing the man born blind).  Brown reminds me of cardboard boxes, which is where some people who are homeless pack their belongings and live under.  Brown reminds me of wood, and Jesus was a carpenter by trade, serving his community in that way, before starting his ministry.  Brown is rope, twine, which was untied for Him to sit on the donkey so people waved palm branches.  Brown is dirt, which he washed off from his disciples' feets.  Another shade of brown is manila, and a handful of my friends have gone to Manila, Philippines, and returned with a new perspective (and you can do it right here, if you live with that sense of purpose for God intensely without distraction, and live among the people, with the people).  Brown is like sepia, where you look to the past and remember His miracles and faith as encouragement for the future.  Brown reminds me of El Paso, and Austin even (because burnt orange is sort of brown-ish), and His providence during those contrasting different times.  Brown reminds me of nature in general, and how He commands everything in nature, and drew away from the crowd to be in nature, while communing with the Father.  Brown reminds me of the staff of a shepherd.  Brown is bread, which He broke enough for thousands of people, and commands us to break "in remembrance of Me."  Brown is the cross that he was nailed to, that paid for the sins of the world, for you and me

where there is poverty, there is the kingdom

--henri nouwen

I was sleeping in my car like a homeless person, ha.  My dad was like, thank God you weren't robbed.  I got a tap on my window.  The restaurant we planned to go to (San Tong) didn't take cash and, the one day I forgot my cell phone (whoa, seven missed calls, the day I forget my phone), I wasn't prepared to bring some.  We go to another one (Hong Kong Cafe), and it didn't take cash either.  We go to one that supposedly Linton "goes to all the time", and it was closed, for Tuesdays.  Then we walked around and finally ended up at a Vietnamese place that neither of us knew existed.  It wasn't great, but I was hungry hungry hippo.  I also felt bad because I used their restroom.  It was funny that they had this big 'serene' rock fountain--with 'Caution: Wet Floor' signs in front of it; totally kills the mood LOL.  They totally missed a couple of food items ("but um, that's what the menu says....").

Anyway, so my friend took me out to eat and then to get gelati (tried five flavors) with lots of driving in order to chat.  I don't think anything was solved, but somehow, on the way home, the songs on the radio seemed brighter.  It wasn't like, whaaa, hippy-land, I have gained the joy of my salvation.  But, God's a teensy bit closer than before, God is good.  She's not someone who's eloquent with words (which can become a pet peeve *ahem*), but she was herself ("darn, I always make you happy" LOL):

Jesus cured people not by doing all sorts of complicated things. A power went out from him, and everyone was cured. He didn't say, "Let me talk to you for ten minutes, and maybe I can do something about this." Everyone who touched him was cured, because a power went out from his pure heart. He wanted one thing—to do the will of God. He was the completely obedient one, the one who was always listening to God. Out of this listening came an intimacy with God that radiated out to everyone Jesus saw and touched. "Go out and heal the sick. Walk on the snake. Call the dead to life." This is not small talk. Yet Jesus said, "Whatever I do, you can do too and even greater things."  Trust in that healing power. Trust that if you are living as the beloved you will heal people whether or not you notice it.

Discover that right in the middle of pain there is a blessing. Right in the middle of your tears—that's where the dance starts and joy is first felt. In this crazy world, there's an enormous distinction between good times and bad, between sorrow and joy. But in the eyes of God, they're never separated. Where there is pain, there is healing. Where there is mourning, there is dancing. Where there is poverty, there is the kingdom.

Amen.

Pride

The nature and depth of human pride are illuminated by comparing boasting to self-pity. Both are manifestations of pride. Boasting is the response of pride to success. Self-pity is the response of pride to suffering. Boasting says, "I deserve admiration because I have achieved so much." Self-pity says, "I deserve admiration because I have suffered so much." Boasting is the voice of pride in the heart of the strong. Self-pity is the voice of pride in the heart of the weak. Boasting sounds self-sufficient, Self-pity sounds self-sacrificing.  The reason self-pity does not look like pride is that it appears to be so needy. But the need arises from a wounded ego. It doesn’t come from a sense of unworthiness, but from a sense of unrecognized worthiness. It is the response of unapplauded pride.

Lust After Holiness

PRAYER:  We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.  --2 Corinthians 10:5

PRAISE:  Save me from bloodguilt, O God, the God who saves me, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.  --Psalm 51:14-17

SING:   Your face is beautiful / And Your eyes are like the stars / Your gentle hands have healing / There inside the scars / Your loving arms they draw me near / And Your smile it brings me peace / Draw me closer oh my Lord / Draw me closer Lord to Thee / Captivate us, Lord Jesus / Set our eyes on You / Devastate us with Your presence / Falling down / And rushing river, draw us nearer / Holy fountain consume us with You / Captivate us Lord Jesus, with You / Your voice is powerful / And Your words are radiant bright / In Your breath and shadow / I will come close and abide / You whisper love and life divine / And Your fellowship is free / Draw me closer O my Lord / Draw me closer Lord to Thee / Captivate us, Lord Jesus / Set our eyes on You / Devastate us with Your presence / Falling down / And rushing river, draw us nearer / Holy fountain consume us with You / Captivate us Lord Jesus, with You / Let everything be lost in the shadows / Of the light of Your face / Let every chain be broken from me / As I’m bound in Your grace / For Your yoke is easy, Your burden is light / You’re full of wisdom, power and might / And every eye will see You / Captivate us, Lord Jesus / Set our eyes on You / Devastate us with Your presence / Falling down / And rushing river, draw us nearer / Holy fountain consume us with You / Captivate us Lord Jesus, with You  --Watermark
